This story really is incomplete without reference to Maximilian’s wife, Princess Charlotte of Belgium/Carlota of Mexico, and how she tried to rally support in Europe for her husband once Napoleon had left them high and dry. After Maximilian’s death she ended up having a complete mental collapse and never recovered.
